OPD said a CHP air unit notified them they were pursuing the vehicle in Oakland. CHP patrol officers pursued the vehicle briefly but ended the chase shortly thereafter, OPD said.
The vehicle, however, continued to drive recklessly and traveled to the area of 12th Avenue and East 21st, near the San Antonio Recreation Area. The driver lost control of the vehicle and struck two pedestrians on the sidewalk.
At that point, the suspect got out of the vehicle and ran before being taken into custody by CHP officers.
Arriving at the scene, OPD officers located a man and a woman lying on the ground with severe injuries. The man died at the scene. The woman was transported to the hospital where doctors listed her as stable.
Both victims, according to OPD, were Oakland residents in their 40s. The identity of the deceased man is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and that drugs or alcohol do not appear to have played a factor in the crash.
