The City of Shreveport honored Sportran driver Valerie Rossher for her efforts through a special proclamation for bravery during their Friday meeting before Memorial Day.
What began as a normal day riding the bus down a street in Shreveport became national news
when it exploded in a terrifying event on April 16. The Sportran driver first noticed the smoke and immediately reacted.
“Mrs. Ross responded to the emergency with composure and professionalism by immediately notifying dispatch, and safely moving the bus out of traffic into a safe area to begin evacuation as per her training,” said Tonya Bogin, Clerk of Council.
“On that horrific day, it could have been a situation that was much worse. But because of the skills and training you have. Along with your commitment and love for people, you saved not only the citizens of Shreveport, but also your own life, the lives of those in the surrounding area,” said Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor, District A.
Mayor Tom Arceneaux supported the special proclamation, which served as an official seal of appreciation for putting oneself above others.
“Sometimes people do things that they don’t think are very big. But they’re enormous. This was one of those times,” Arceneaux said.
During the meeting, Ross said she humbly appreciates the recognition.
“Thank you all so much,” Ross told the council.
Her Sportran team joined alongside her, saying her nine years with the transportation service has not been in vain.
“We thank Mrs. Ross for her bravery in the time of extreme pressure. Hats off to Mrs. Ross. We value and appreciate you and what you bring to Sportran,” said a Sportran representative.
