Colts’ notebook: Joint practices set during camp with Ravens, Packers

INDIANAPOLIS — While players, coaches and staff members still were dealing with the passing of owner Jim Irsay, the Indianapolis Colts’ offseason work continued on the field.

Wednesday, that meant another full-scale practice as part of the organized team activity (OTAs) phase.

And that meant the first opportunity for the media to watch the open competition at quarterback between Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones.

They alternated operating the offense during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 work. Richardson took the first reps in 7-on-7, but it’s risky reading anything into that.

“Like I said to you guys early in the spring, it is an open competition,’’ Colts coach Shane Steichen said. “Those guys are competing. We’re breaking down the reps. They are both getting ‘1’ reps. They’re both getting ‘2’ reps.

“I think through OTAs, we’ve got nine good practices. They’ll both get about 170 reps a piece with those guys, with the 1s and 2s, and we’ll flip-flop them.’’

Injury update

Linebacker Zaire Franklin was among players present but not participating in practice. The team’s leading tackler underwent recent surgery on his left ankle.

Also, wideout Josh Downs and tight end Drew Ogletree looked on as practice unfolded. Steichen said each was dealing with a “soft tissue’’ issue.

Running back Jonathan Taylor was not at practice.

“Yeah, he’s back in Florida right now working, but hopefully will be back soon,’’ Steichen said.

Joint practices set

The Colts will continue their tradition of holding joint practices during training camp.

They will share the practice field with the Ravens in Baltimore prior to the Aug. 7 preseason game at M&T Bank Stadium. The Colts then will have joint work with the Packers at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield prior to the Aug. 16 preseason game with Green Bay at Lucas Oil Stadium.
