Abilene’s Talon Cherry uses music to inspire & connect with the community

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Nextdoor app can be used to find lost dogs or learn what is happening in the neighborhood, but scrolling through, you might also find the serenading sound of Talon Cherry.

His love of music and songwriting began as a child in Oregon, but it wasn’t until he was 30 that he decided to put his words to the melodies. He said the decision for his first post was out of fun.

“I was like, well. I’ll get to know some people in the neighborhood. What am I going to post? I guess I could post my music, and I did that. People seem to dig it,” Cherry said. “I might not be famous, I might not be a major songwriter or even that talented, but some people like it.”

With his inspirational messages and heartfelt songs, Cherry said he wants to be a light for others, even if it’s for a small period of time.

“I like to put my music out there, especially if I’m feeling something one day, and I think someone else might, I’ll just put something up,” Cherry said. “That’s something that makes me feel like I can connect to it. That’s, I guess, that’s really how music is supposed to be anyway, so I just try to be that for other people.”

With more than 20 original songs to his name, his favorite song, “Rearview Heartache,” comes from a transformative time in his life, when he moved back home to Oregon, met his wife, who is from Abilene, and discovered his faith, which led him to Abilene. He said he uses his music to share his story.

“A lot of folks kind of fall into that same category where maybe they led a life that wasn’t so good before, and now they do live a better life than what they did. I’ve had conversations around faith a lot since I’ve been posting music,” Cherry said.

Cherry uses his chord progressions to share his story of faith and overcoming hardships. He has been invited to venues in the Big Country to perform, but his main audience is through his phone camera.
