The Human Bean coffee shop to open this week

Sioux Falls’ first location for The Human Bean opens this week.

Opening day is Thursday for the Oregon-based coffee shop being franchised locally by Elizabeth Menke.

The location will offer drive-thru and walk-up service at 2801 E. Jackson St., which is along 69th Street west of Southeastern Avenue.

“When I first learned about The Human Bean, the thing that stuck out to me immediately was the mission to be part of the community — to be good and do good. My goal is for Sioux Falls to see that this isn’t just something we say,” Menke said.

“We truly want to contribute to the community of Sioux Falls as a whole, as well as to build a community of baristas, customers and neighbors that love coffee and connecting with the people around them. We’ve already experienced that throughout barista training, in talking to neighbors walking by and in visiting other local businesses and organizations around town.”

Construction is complete, and “I’ve also had a lot of fun designing our patio space to be inviting for customers to enjoy a nice day and conversation with friends or family when they’re not in a hurry,” Menke said.

The Human Bean’s menu is designed for all ages and tastes, she said. It includes coffee and espresso drinks, full-leaf teas, infused Bright Energy drinks made with caffeine from green coffee beans, smoothies and Italian sodas.

“Our signature Granitas, including the fan favorite Java Chip, are blended espresso drinks that are delicious on their own or customized with different flavors,” Menke said.

“Our baristas have had so much fun trying all the drinks during training and will have lots of recommendations ready to go.”

Food options include a breakfast burrito, bagel, sandwiches and sweet treats. Locally made, organic, gluten-free and dairy-free protein bites from Wholly Balls will be sold there too.

While The Human Bean is fully staffed, interested applicants can visit here for future openings.

Hours will be 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For opening day, drinks will be 50 percent off, and a week of promotions will start June 2.

The Human Bean’s first giveback day will be June 20, donating $1 for every drink sold to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“I know there are families in Sioux Falls who have been impacted by this amazing hospital, and I would love to hear from them and share their stories,” Menke said.
