Private high school in Oakland named among 10 best in US

(KRON) — One of the best private high schools in the country is right here in the Bay Area. According to Niche’s 2025 Best Private High Schools list, one school in Oakland was ranked among the 10 best.

The College Preparatory School placed seventh on the national list. Niche gave the school an overall grade of A+, which includes that grade in individual categories such as academics, teachers, clubs & activities, diversity and “college prep.” Niche reports that College Prep students have an average graduation rate of 100%.

College Prep is located at 6100 Broadway in the northeastern part of Oakland. According to its website,

tuition for the 2025-26 school year at College Prep costs $60,050.

Redwood City’s Stanford Online High School (10th) was the only other California private school to crack the top 10 ranking. As of 2020, there is a total of 3,626 private and secondary high schools in the country, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

Niche also named College Prep the best private high school in California. Stanford Online High School (Redwood City) ranked second in the state, and The Quarry Lane School (Dublin) ranked ninth. Also in California’s top 10 private schools ranking were Hillsborough’s The Nueva School (4th) and Crystal Springs Upland School (10th).

Niche says it used data from the U.S. Department of Education. For private schools it ranked, Niche factored “Top College Score” as the most-weighted factor (32.6%), followed by college enrollment (21.2%) and “culture & diversity grade.”
