Preventing the ‘summer slide’ one book at a time

Educators say summer reading is essential in helping prevent what’s often referred to as the ‘summer slide’.

Scholastic references a study done on the ‘summer slide’ saying, “The study showed that kids lose significant knowledge in reading and math over summer break, which tends to have a snowball effect as they experience subsequent skill loss each year.”

BookSmiles, a local non-profit organization is hoping to help. Their mission is to “give new life to used books and distribute them to promote childhood literacy, inspire readers, support educators, and strengthen communities.”

Executive director of BookSmiles, Larry Abrams and daycare coordinator, Rishawn Davis, joined us in the PHL 17 studio to talk about their mission and how they hope to help fight against the ‘summer slide’.
