On May 25, officers with the Valley Police Department responded to an apartment in the 2000 block of Calgary Crescent around 2:00 a.m. They found the toddler with a single gunshot wound. The child was flown to Piedmont Hospital in Columbus, where he was pronounced dead.
Preliminary investigation indicates the child may have accidentally shot himself after locating an unsecured handgun inside the home. At the time of the shooting, the child’s mother and another young child were asleep in the apartment.
The investigation remains active and charges have not been filed at this time. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Sgt. Burgos at 334-756-5203 or reach out anonymously to Greater Valley Area Crime Stoppers at 334-215-STOP, 1-833-AL1-STOP, or online at www.215stop.com.
