Andretti Global, PREMA Racing entries moved to rear of field; fined and suspended for technical violations

INDIANAPOLIS (May 26, 2025) — INDYCAR officials have issued significant penalties to three teams following post-race technical inspections after Sunday’s 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, including entries from powerhouse Andretti Global and rookie entrant PREMA Racing.

The No. 27 and No. 28 Andretti Global entries, along with PREMA Racing’s No. 90 car, were found in violation of multiple technical regulations. All three teams have been demoted to the rear of the field in the official results, fined $100,000 each, and had their team/competition managers suspended for one race.

According to an INDYCAR statement, the violations involve unauthorized modifications that could provide aerodynamic advantages.

Andretti Global’s entries penalized for altered energy management components

Inspections of the No. 27 (Kyle Kirkwood) and No. 28 (Marcus Ericsson) cars revealed illegal modifications to the Dallara-supplied Energy Management System (EMS) covers and related mounting points. These changes included unapproved spacers and parts that potentially improved aerodynamic performance—violating several key rules:

  • Rule 9.3.1 (Improper Conduct)
  • Rule 14.1.2 (Approval required for modifications)
  • Rule 14.1.3 (Use of parts as supplied by approved vendors)

PREMA Racing cited for illegal front wing setup

The No. 90 entry from PREMA Racing, driven by Callum Ilott, failed post-race inspection due to improper front wing configuration. Officials cited a failure to meet the minimum endplate height and location requirements, in violation of:

  • Rule 9.3.1 (Improper Conduct)
  • Rule 14.7.6.4 (Component positioning)
  • Rule 14.7.6.8 (Technical inspection dimensions)

Penalties affect finishing order, points, and earnings

As a result of the violations, Kirkwood (initially 32nd), Ericsson (31st), and Ilott (33rd) were officially reclassified to the back of the finishing order. While they completed the full 200 laps, their final positions were adjusted based on the penalty. Prize money and championship points have also been recalculated.

In addition to the monetary fines and reordering of results, the team/competition managers for all three entries have been suspended for the next event—the Detroit Grand Prix on the Streets of Detroit.

Updated Indianapolis 500 Top 5:

  1. Alex Palou (No. 10, Chip Ganassi Racing)
  2. David Malukas (No. 4)
  3. Pato O’Ward (No. 5)
  4. Felix Rosenqvist (No. 60)
  5. Santino Ferrucci (No. 14)

Palou’s victory marked his first career win on an oval and solidified his position atop the championship standings with 306 points.

All teams have the option to appeal the penalties in accordance with NTT INDYCAR SERIES procedures.
