City sees decrease in holiday weekend shootings compared to previous years

CHICAGO — The long holiday weekend kicked off the unofficial start of Summer in Chicagoland and it also brought in some positive news for the city, as police reported a sharp decrease in shootings compared to previous years.

Looking at some of the preliminary numbers, at least 20 people were shot over the holiday weekend, and of those, only two were fatal incidents.

Data obtained by WGN-TV last year indicated that over 41 people were shot over the holiday weekend last year, and of those, nine were killed.

Over the same weekend in 2023, police data showed that more than 50 people were shot, 11 fatally.

Ahead of the holiday community leaders in the city were pushing for a safe and peaceful weekend.

It came after city leaders detailed their collaborative approach to safety this summer.

Chicago Mayor Barnadon Johnson is set to hold a press conference on Tuesday morning where he is expected to discuss the weekend violence.
