‘All gave some, some gave all’: Fallen Central Valley veterans honored this Memorial Day

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Across the Valley, fallen heroes were honored with flags flown high and wreaths laid in their memory.

Over 1,400 American flags make up the Avenue of Flags at the Fresno Memorial Garden. Congressman Jim Costa called it the largest free-standing display in the West.

“It’s really a time that the families come out. They know exactly where their loved one’s flag is. We have a lot of families that ask to place their flag every year,” said Jaydee Mayugba, general manager of the Fresno Memorial Garden.

This Memorial Day, Fresno Memorial Garden hosted its 62nd annual service, honoring the sacrifices made by both the living and those who gave their lives to protect and serve.

“All gave some, some gave all,” said Vietnam veteran Gary Wright.

Gold, Silver and Blue Star Families, along with local VFW chapters, laid down a wreath in respect of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“A Gold Star mom is a mother that has lost someone in the service,” one speaker said.

Costa was honored for his continuous support of Central Valley veterans during the ceremony.

“Well, I’m touched, and I’m surprised,” Costa said.

The Avenue of Flags takes a lot of work and gracious volunteers. Helpers are needed to fold and store the flags on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Over in Clovis, the Veterans Memorial District hosted its annual event, filled with a variety of activities. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., a community that deeply appreciates their sacrifice gathered to enjoy a live band, a patriotic concert, veteran documentaries, and food.

“This one is more casual,” said Navy veteran David Lopez.

It was a first for Lopez, accompanied by Marine Veteran Robert Carlos.

“It’s an honor to see a lot of the civilians come out here, even though they may not have family members that are veterans. And it’s just the thankfulness that they have for us, that they can participate,” Lopez said.

The singer, at the event, even took a moment to invite up all the men and women who served our country, so the community could show them their love and appreciation.
