The 88-year-old cleric was archbishop of the Portland diocese for 16 years beginning in 1997. Ordained in 1961 in Chicago, he became Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago in 1983. He moved to Winona, Minnesota in 1987 when he was installed as their Bishop and stayed there for a decade before moving to Portland.
Archbishop Vlazny retired in January 2013 and remained as the Archbishop Emeritus until his death on Friday.
In a statement, Archbishop Alexander Sample said he was sorrowful when he heard about his predecessor’s death.
“He was truly one of the kindest and most thoughtful men that I have ever known. His love for the priesthood and his own episcopal ministry was evident at all times. He has left a lasting and remarkable legacy in this local Church in Western Oregon,” Archbishop Sample said. “I will be forever grateful for his kindness to me from the moment I first arrived here 12 years ago. He will be missed very deeply by all of us.”
The archdiocese said funeral arrangements are pending.
