The next Bay Area city best to raise a family is the “Capital of Silicon Valley,” San Jose, which is greatly due to education and childcare.

The City by the Bay ranked just outside of the top 20. In 21st place is San Francisco due to the high family fun variable.

The health and safety category pulled Santa Rosa into the top 30 of WalletHub’s ranking.

On the other side of the list, Oakland ranked 116 out of 182. Despite scoring high in affordability, the lack of health and safety, education, and socio-economics causes the town to be so low on the list.

Methodology

WalletHub compared 182 U.S. cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — across five key dimensions: family fun, health and safety, education and child care, affordability and socio-economics.
