A bloody poster of The Cure and ‘a lot of weed’: Logic transforms St. Helens record shop for debut film

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – With help from a St. Helens, Oregon record shop, musician Logic’s debut film is making its premiere at the Tribeca film festival in June.

Written, directed, and starring the Grammy-nominated artist, “Paradise Records,” follows Cooper, who is trying to save his record shop from foreclosure.

“The bank won’t give him a loan, someone keeps offering to buy the property — and then the robbery. He’s not having a great day,” the film description reads on the Tribeca website. “Thankfully, he’s got his motley crew of entertaining employees and a lot of weed to help him figure out how to get himself out of this mess.”

The film was shot inside Endlessound Records, which opened a few years ago at the 2C’s Vendor Mall in St. Helens before expanding into the current larger space along South 1st Street.

“I’ve always had a passion for music, always been a big record collector,” said Endlessound Records owner Loric Riggs, who co-owns the shop with his wife, Breezy. The shop is “an expansion of the things that I’ve always been into,” Riggs added.

During the move into the bigger space, something unusual happened. Riggs got a call from a film location scout, asking if he’d be interested in allowing “Paradise Records” to film in his shop.

“I was like, ‘I gotta be honest, I don’t think that it’s a good time right now because we’re moving,’” Riggs told KOIN 6 News, recalling his conversation with the scout. “But it turned out that was perfect for them because we’re moving and so they were able to come in here before we were super well-established and do the work that they needed to do to make it a film set.”

With a small crew of 50 people, filming began in May and wrapped in June.

“It was so fun,” said Michelle Damis, “Paradise Records” production supervisor and member of the Oregon Media Production Association. “Pretty much everyone on set was like, ‘This is probably the best film set we’ve ever worked on.’”

“The cameos were just off the hook,” Riggs said, referencing appearances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ron Perlman, Diedrich Bader, Juicy J and even Logic’s dad.

“It’s going to be exciting to see the film. I think everyone in the world needs some good laughter right now, so it’s going to provide that and it’s going to be a fun film, lots of laughs,” Damis said before declaring the film will be the “breakout comedy of the year.”

While filming has wrapped and cast and crew members prepare for Tribeca, fans can stop by Endlessound and see remnants of the film set.

The shop “looks just like it looks in the film which is really cool and really unusual,” said Damis, “It’s unique to have the location that was made for the movie, but it’s also an existing business.”

This includes props like blood dripping down music posters and some of Endlessound’s light fixtures, as well as the “Paradise Records” name left emblazoned on the storefront and inside the shop.

“Bobby (Logic), started off in music, ended up Grammy nominated, he wrote a book, a New York Times best seller, and now he has the filming bug. He wrote this, starred in it, directed it, and he really did a dynamite job,” Damis said. “Bobby actually lives in Oregon and had originally based the script on his friend’s record store in Central Oregon.”

With buzz starting to generate over the film, including from Rolling Stone, Riggs and Damis are hoping to conjure more tourism in St. Helens, which already sees some film tourism from the film “Halloweentown.”

“It’s literally the only reason we opened a record store here is because of the ‘Halloweentown’ traffic,” Riggs explained. “It’s nuts. I mean, we do 40% of our sales in October.”

“Thirty-nine percent of all travel worldwide is instigated by people seeing a film or a television show,” Damis explained. “It’s really amazing that here in St. Helens, it’s also ‘Halloweentown,’ and that movie was 25 years ago, but still, this past October we had 68,000 visitors for ‘Halloweentown’ and $1.2 million drop into the economy just from visitors.”

“We’re trying to bring more and more projects up here and to increase the tourism and show people this lovely little town,” Damis added. “We have a spectacular riverfront, that was a mill years ago, the city has been redeveloping. So, there’s going to be a brand-new riverfront, and you can see three, four mountains from the river. It’s just gorgeous. I love it here and love for people to come up and see.”

“Hopefully, we can continue to bolster the tourism to benefit everybody in the area from this. Tourism is key to getting people down here and spending,” Riggs said. “I try to manage my own expectations, but I hope for a situation where we get ‘Twilight’ tourism here all the time. We get ‘Halloweentown’ tours, we get tourism from the film industry all the time, so we’re already benefitting from it. But I truly hope this will just add to that and benefit all of us.”

In the meantime, the “Paradise Records” family is awaiting a film studio to pick up the film after Tribeca for a wide release.

The cast and crew — including Riggs and Damis — got a sneak peek of the film, watching a rough cut of the movie at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland.

“It’s surreal now,” Riggs said of seeing his shop on the big screen. “When we looked at the listing on the Tribeca website, we’re like, ‘Our record store is on the Tribeca website.’ It’s such a trip.”

“Paradise Records” runs June 6-7 and June 13-14 at the Tribeca Film Festival. Three screenings have already sold out within 24 hours.
