The 21st annual event began with the playing of taps and a military salute as runners gathered to honor service members and take in the views.
Runners took off from the starting line near Soldier Field around 7 a.m. and made their way South before turning around and returning to the Museum Campus.
8,000 runners took part in the race and the lakeside welcomed them with plenty of sunshine and cool temperatures.
While the event offered runners the chance to take in a cool morning, for others, it was an opportunity to honor and reflect on the sacrifices of those who served.
Saturday’s event raised money for The Road Home Program, which is dedicated to the mental health and wellness of veterans and service members.
