Agents raid East Albany Park residence amid probe into killing of Israeli Embassy staffers

CHICAGO (WGN) — FBI agents in Chicago raided a residence on the city’s Northwest Side on Thursday morning as investigators tried to piece together what led to the shooting of two Israeli Embassy staff members in Washington, DC.

Authorities said the suspect, 31-year-old Elias Rodriguez, a Chicago resident, was taken into custody just after the Wednesday night shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum.

“I wish I had the opportunity to talk with him, because if I had, I would have talked him out of it,” said John Wayne Fry, who lives in the building on the 4700 block of North Troy Street that was the focus of the feds’ raid.

Fry said his interaction with Rodriguez was infrequent; they’d pass each other in the hallway or meet in the vestibule while checking their mailboxes.

“He was always friendly,” Fry said, adding that Rodriguez lived in the building for a few years.

Elias rodriguez yelled “free, free palestine” as he was being taken into custody.

FBI agents were seen entering and exiting Rodriguez’s alleged apartment, at times carrying out boxes. A Hyundai Accent parked outside the building was towed away.

While the regional FBI office in Chicago didn’t confirm why its agents were at the property, the office did confirm the agents were conducting “authorized law enforcement activity” in the area.

Fry said Rodriguez lived on the second floor of the building. A sign reading “Justice for Wadea,” in reference to the deadly stabbing of 6-year-old Palestinian American Wadea al-Fayoumi of Plainfield in October 2023, was visible in a window.

Rodriguez’s alleged social media accounts are said to have posts criticizing the war in Gaza. He’s also said to have been involved with Chicago-area organizations.

Fry said he would have told Rodriguez that violence is never the answer.

“Guns and bombs are not going to end this genocide,” he said.

Yaron lischinsky and sarah milgrim

Authorities identified the victims in the shooting as Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim.

According to the Associated Press, Lischinsky was a research assistant, and Milgrim organized visits and missions to Israel. Yechiel Leiter, Israeli Ambassador to the U.S., told the Associated Press that Lischinsky had planned on proposing to Milgrim next week.

Rodriguez faces first-degree murder and firearms charges. His next court appearance was scheduled for June 18 in Washington, D.C.
