On May 3, 2025, officers shot an individual in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. According to the National Park Service (NPS), the subject ran his vehicle into theirs, and NPS law enforcement officers fired their guns. The full footage is located on the NPS website.
Gregory Aaron Farley, 51, was the individual involved in this incident. He has since been federally charged with assault on a federal officer.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona sent an “attempt to locate” notice to NPS law enforcement officers on the morning of May 3. According to a release from NPS, the notice indicated that a man in a white pickup truck was trying to break into a vehicle with a machete.
On the evening of May 3, at 7:47 p.m., officers received a call about “suspicious activity” on Highway 89, just across the Utah and Arizona border, on the Utah side. A portion of a 911 call from a passerby is played in the bodycam footage.
“I pulled into Lone Rock Beach about ten minutes ago, and there is a gentleman at the corner of 89 and Lone Rock,” the 911 caller says. “And he appears to be either drunk or on drugs.”
NPS says that the man was reportedly acting erratically and running back and forth across the highway, hiding behind bushes and yelling loudly.
“I passed him multiple times on the highway because he was doing some erratic behavior, and he has a little dog with him… he’s just doing some crazy stuff and I just wanted to let somebody know about it,” the 911 caller tells dispatch.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found that the license plate matched the one in the “attempt to locate” sent by the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office. NPS officers then performed a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Farley.
Body-worn camera footage from two responding officers showed them exiting their patrol vehicle to speak with Farley. He is holding his hands outside the window as the officers approach.
Farley said several things that are unintelligible over the recording before the officer begins speaking with him. The officer introduced himself and told Farley that they had spoken yesterday.
“We got a call about you,” the officer said.
“A call about me?” Farley replied.
He then accelerated away from the officers. NPS officers told dispatch that he “just ran on us” and rushed back to their vehicle.
“He almost hit me,” the officer said.
The two officers, who are in the same patrol vehicle, pursued Farley north on Highway 89. They noted that a dog had been hit on the road. The officers saw him do a U-turn and narrowly avoided being hit by the truck Farley was driving.
“He’s got screwdrivers and throwin’ objects in the car, dude,” the second officer stated. He reported to dispatch that Farley attempted to hit their vehicle and “swerved at” them.
The officers followed the truck almost half a mile south, back across the Arizona border.
“He’s swerving back and forth, man. I think he’s intoxicated. He’s like sweaty, he’s got glassy eyes,” one of the officers said. They saw the truck swerve off the road into the dirt and started trying to get out of its way.
This time, Farley crashed his truck into the driver’s side of the NPS officers’ vehicle.
The officers fought past the airbags, jumped out of the vehicle, and began firing at the truck. They told Farley to get on the ground and reported “shots fired” to dispatch. At this point, they were on the Arizona side of the border.
According to NPS, the officers tried to get Farley to surrender, but he would not exit his truck. Additional law enforcement officers arrived at the scene from NPS, Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol, Page Police Department, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, and Arizona DPS.
Law enforcement blocked off the highway and spent 45 minutes negotiating with Farley until he agreed to surrender. An officer, who was also a paramedic, was able to get him to exit the vehicle by offering medical help for bleeding on his right leg.
She guided Farley to walk backwards towards officers, and he was safely taken into custody. He was treated on scene, according to NPS, and taken to Page Hospital for injuries from a single gunshot wound and the vehicle collision.
The officers in the vehicle that he hit with his truck were treated for minor injuries at the hospital as well.
