Some especially dedicated shoppers are vowing to camp out ahead of Uptown Cheapskate’s opening Thursday.
The national “upscale thrift” retailer specializes in buying and selling trendy, gently used clothing, shoes and accessories for teens and adults.
It’s opening at the Western Mall, 2101 W. 41st St., attached to sister store Kid to Kid, which franchisee Alexa Goodroad opened last year.
Ramping up Uptown Cheapskate has gone well, she said.
“We’ve had a ton of people bringing stuff day after day,” she said. “We do a lot of mall brands; the trendier American Eagle, Aerie, Nike, UnderArmour and Adidas are always popular.”
There also are new and used accessories, including designer handbags.
“We prefer (sellers bring in) receipts, but we have a lot of Coach and Kate Spade and Tory Burch and all the fun things,” Goodroad said.
While the store had taken a recent pause on buying, it will resume with Thursday’s opening.
“We will still need stuff. We need all men’s clothing, shoes and accessories, and for women’s, we’re most in need of short sleeves and dresses,” Goodroad said.
While the store has staffed up, “I’m sure we’ll always be hiring,” she added. “We could use a handful more, but we’re working with what we’ve got, and we’ve been able to shift our team from one side to the other as needed.”
She also could use more inventory at Kid to Kid, especially as back-to-school shopping approaches.
“Last year, we literally ran out of clothes,” Goodroad said. “We’re just trying to prepare and make sure we have enough jeans and long sleeves … so we have a good selection, but it’s going to get crazy in the next couple months. We had a really great first year and are looking forward to keeping the momentum going. I’m sure it’ll be a little crazy with both stores open, but we’re trying to be ready as much as we can.”
Doors will open at Uptown Cheapskate at 9 a.m. Thursday. Hours for grand opening weekend will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Regular hours will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
