UPDATE 5:45 p.m.:
EMERY COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A 57-year-old motorcycle rider was killed after crashing into a semi-trailer this afternoon.
Around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a 57-year-old driver from the Netherlands was traveling westbound on US-6 in Emery County on a BMW cross-country motorcycle, according to Utah Highway Patrol. This is a steep uphill area.
A semi pulling a tanker was traveling ahead of the motorcycle in the same lane. It had its hazard lights to warn other drivers of its slow speed as it travelled uphill. According to UHP, the motorcycle “failed to recognize the slower speed” and crashed into the trailer.
A third vehicle that was driving in the other lane passed the motorcycle at the time of the collision. Due to debris, the vehicle sustained “minor damage.” The driver of the semi did not sustain any injuries.
Utah Highway Patrol says that the weather was “clear and dry with no visual obstructions.” The westbound lanes remained closed for roughly an hour and have since reopened.
