London mobile home park suffers second blow as donations are stolen, community rallies to rebuild

LONDON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Nearly a week after deadly tornadoes hit southeast Kentucky, a local mobile home park is facing heartbreak once again after donations meant to help residents rebuild were stolen overnight.

“When we got here, we just started looking. I didn’t even realize when I pulled in,” said Karenda Vaughn, co-owner of Billy Vaughn Memorial Trailer Park. “I just got out, and then we started going to get stuff. We were like, ‘Where’s this at? Where’s that at?'”

It was a heartbreaking realization, but soon came an outpouring of support.

“Just today alone, we’ve had probably three carloads of 20 people coming in at a time, just in those three. And they’re out here working; we’ve got some back doing construction, and we’ve got some girls organizing supplies so it’s easier to find and get what you need.”

Among those volunteering is Monroe Murphy. He was inside his trailer when it was blown away by the tornado.

“I just lay down on my floor, and as soon as I lay down on my floor, it felt like my trailer was lifted straight up in the air, turned upside down, and slammed back down on the roof,” Monroe recalled. “Of course, I went with it.”

Monroe suffered a head injury that required staples, along with several cuts and bruises.

But instead of going straight to the hospital, he had a different mission.

“I started searching the whole trailer park looking for survivors, and I can tell that the rest of the trailer park was devastated, but all the homes were still intact, and everybody that was staying was okay. They were shaken but okay.”

LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

He’s been at the park every day helping his neighbors, a kind of support that co-owners Vaughn and Debbie Jansen said keeps them going.

“We do have to be here; we run the place and take care of our people,” Jansen added. “They’re our people now. And when you get to know these people, which I do, I’ve been here every day, you have such a heart for them.”

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the park rebuild.
