Lakeland’s Gavin Gatere Crowned 2025 TSSAA DII AA State Decathlon Champion

Gavin Gatere, a Lakeland resident and standout student-athlete at Memphis University School, has been crowned the 2025 TSSAA Division II AA State Decathlon Champion, earning an impressive 6,981 points—placing him among the top five high school decathletes in the nation.

Gavin’s journey to the top of the podium is nothing short of extraordinary. A product of Lakeland Elementary and Lakeland Middle School, he has long been known in the community for his drive, focus, and athletic versatility across sports like soccer, football, and track. But it was the grueling ten-event decathlon where he would ultimately make his mark on state history.

“In three short years, he came from scoring 4,526 points and finishing 19th as a freshman, to 6,123 points and seventh as a sophomore, to now winning it all,” said his mother, Irene Gatere. “Watching him win the state decathlon was one of the most nerve-wracking and proudest moments of my life. He’s worked so hard for this, and it’s incredible to see that dedication pay off.”

The decathlon is widely regarded as one of the most demanding events in all of track and field, testing not just athletic ability, but endurance, mental toughness, and consistency across two intense days of competition. Gavin’s performance showed all of that and more—earning him a well-deserved spot in the national spotlight.

Gavin (number 37), a lifelong resident of lakeland, was introduced to sports in lakeland as seen here in a 5th grade lakeland lions youth football photo.

“Whether it was in soccer, football, or track, Gavin’s always been determined and competitive, even as a kid,” said his father, Robert Gatere. “But this title isn’t just about talent—it’s about years of discipline, sacrifice, and heart. There were so many early mornings and late nights, not just for him, but for all of us. He pushed through injuries, long training days, and fatigue. Seeing him on that podium made every moment worth it.”

The family describes this achievement not as a final destination, but as a major milestone in a much bigger journey—one that’s just beginning.

“We’re just grateful to be along for the ride,” Irene added. “More than the win, we’re proud of the person he’s become—humble, hardworking, and resilient.”

As Gavin continues to train and grow, he remains a powerful example to other young athletes and students across Lakeland and beyond: that big dreams, when matched with hard work and determination, can lead to amazing things.

“Gavin is proof that if you set a goal and commit to the work, incredible things can happen,” Robert said. “We hope his story inspires others to believe in themselves.”

Gavin’s victory will be remembered not just for the number of points he scored—but for the perseverance, strength, and character he showed along the way.
