Indy 500 driver gives tour of his motorhome inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — In the month of May, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway isn’t just a race course for the 33 drivers in the field: it’s also their home.

The drivers and owners live out of motorhomes of various sizes in a parking lot in the IMS infield.

Louis Foster, a driver for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, was kind enough to give a tour of his motorhome on Tuesday.

“It’s nice and cozy in here,” Louis said, showing off the living room. “It gets the job done with, kind of, the whole month to spend here. It’s very nice during the days to have a place to come back, kick up your feet, relax and get away from it all.”

The RV included chairs, couches, a table, a kitchen island, refrigerator, sink and oven. Louis said he hasn’t hosted much yet at his IMS home.

“I tend to go to my friend’s ones,” the rookie driver said. “I’m not a particularly amazing chef, so I tend to wiggle my way into their dinners.”

He might not be a good cook, but he’s got necessities in the fridge, including eggs, chicken, some homemade muffins and a classic.

”This is my favorite drink, Arizona Ice Tea,” Louis said, hoisting a jug from the fridge door. “Arnold Palmer, half iced tea, half lemonade. Just lovely.”

But that’s not the only drink in the fridge. The 21-year-old also had a case of beer, but it’s not all for him.

“The boys are coming over tomorrow night, all of my crew. We’re doing pizza and beers, which is going to be lovely to keep team morale up,” Foster said.

The best part about living in the IMS infield during the month of May might be the convenience of it.

“The fact that I can just roll out to something that I have to do during the day is a lot nicer and easier and just makes your life throughout the whole month of May a lot simpler,” Louis said.

Your neighbors may be your competition, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be friendly.

“The nice thing about IndyCar is it’s definitely a family feel,” he said. “Everyone is very kind and supportive.”

Some of the drivers have even been known to prank the others. Louis said he just found out a few days ago from an IndyCar social media post. So far, he hasn’t seen any pranks, but said he has eggs ready to throw if he has to retaliate.

“I think these next few days might be the most likely for something to happen,” he said.

This is where he’ll spend his last few days winding down before speeding up for his very first Indianapolis 500.
