Graduating students and loved ones remember Huffman High School senior killed by gun violence

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Huffman High School senior who fell victim to gun violence is being remembered as his classmates celebrate graduation.

It was a bittersweet moment for Ronald Bennett Jr.’s mother Brittney Hampton and Grandmother Sylvia Bennett-Stone.

“It was sad. I mean because he was supposed to be there, but we were still proud,” said Hampton.

Huffman High School’s Class of 2025 sat, waiting to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas.

Every seat was taken except for one. Valedictorian, Jaeda Davis, acknowledged why in a speech.

“Earlier this year we suffered a heartbreaking loss of a classmate to violence. A pain no one should have to carry especially not so young. I know for some it left an emptiness that words can’t quite reach, so I want to encourage you all to honor our beloved classmate Ronald Bennett.” said Davis.

Hampton and Bennett-Stone were among those in the crowd hearing Davis’ speech. They said they couldn’t miss out on what was supposed to be his special day.

“For me, I could just see Ronald Jr. just there saying ‘yeah, I’m here anyway,’ and we just want to just highlight this day for him,” said Bennett-Stone.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said Ronald Bennett Jr. was shot and killed on 8th Terrace West just after midnight on February 1.

Birmingham Police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old suspect last week, but Bennett’s family believes there may have been more people involved.

“It was kind of like pulling a band aid off again. Your emotions just, everything just… It raises more questions…” said Hampton.

Those questions continued to linger as they seek justice, saying this moment of accomplishment is bittersweet.

“We have to pull together to bring about safety so that other families don’t have to go through this, because this is hard,” said Bennett-Stone.

Ronald’s mother said he had plans to become a wielder after graduation.
