Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming announced that 143,000 checks totaling $34 million will be mailed out Friday, May 30, the largest batch mailed since 2018. Officials said recent data matching to updated addresses found 2,500 claims valued greater than the maximum for automatic checks.
“I want to stress to all of the recipients that these are real checks from the Louisiana Department of Treasury, so please cash them,” said Fleming. “Every year, some of the checks we mail out are not cashed. This is due to people changing addresses and others not believing the checks are real. Let me guarantee that these checks are real. It’s your money.”
The Louisiana Unclaimed Property website defines unclaimed property as abandoned financial assets. The treasurer’s office said there is $1.2 billion in unclaimed property.
