Sanford USD Medical Center makes traffic shifts as road project begins

May 20, 2025

Be prepared to change the way you drive and park around the Sanford USD Medical Center campus.

A project that starts this week will impact traffic in front of the medical buildings and surgical tower on the central Sioux Falls campus, especially the parking lot in front of Medical Building 3.

The area will be affected by an improvement project within the campus that involves adding two lanes to the U-drive south of Medical Building 3, changing it from two lanes to four. The drive serves MB3, MB2 and the surgical tower. Lanes being added will be used for drop-off and valet.

“The south drive is a main access point for patients and visitors. Whether it’s picking up a loved one from a same-day surgery or bringing a baby home after a delivery, this drive accommodates thousands of vehicles each day as Sioux Falls continues to grow and our teams care for more patients at Sanford Health,” said Eric Kinghorn, director of planning and construction at Sanford Health.

“Adding additional pickup and drop-off loops will help keep traffic moving throughout the south drive. With the Orthopedic Hospital opening in January 2026, we anticipate even more traffic on the south side of campus.”

The work will last about three months and impact patient parking and drop-off in front of Medical Building 3. A driving lane will remain open, and valet will be available for the duration of the project.

An island also will be added south of MB2 between the MB2 and MB3 parking lots. The idea is to add additional protection for drivers and pedestrians.

While it’s not part of the work starting this week, the valet station at MB3 also will be relocated from the entryway to a new location.

“Plan ahead and leave yourself extra time while construction is taking place,” Kinghorn said.

“With the addition of the Medical Building 1 parking ramp, there’s ample parking available for patients in the new ramp if they wish to park on their own. Free valet parking will continue to be offered at the front of Medical Building 3 beneath the underpass. While the south drive project will improve access when it’s completed, there will be certain phases of the project that will cause congestion throughout the summer. We plan to have the project complete by the end of August.”
