Tesfaye Shabi, 18, was taken into custody Monday at Horizonte High School for questioning. However, Shabi was not arrested until Tuesday afternoon.
Police responded to an armed robbery that left a 17-year-old dead on May 18. According to Lt. Melody Cutler with Unified PD, the incident began as a meet-up to buy champagne bottles. The meeting went awry when two armed men attacked the seller, who ran to his car, grabbed a gun, and fired at the alleged attackers while running away.
Court documents state Brandon Hollins, 18, who was also at the scene and shot the victim, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Monday.
According to court documents, detectives investigating the homicide determined that Shabi was seated behind the driver during the robbery, holding a “.223 caliber firearm”.
Statements collected by police say Tesfaye got out of the vehicle during the incident and fired his weapon. Three unfired cartridges were also located at the scene that matched the gun Shabi was allegedly holding during the robbery.
