Culver’s to open in northwest Sioux Falls

May 20, 2025

Culver’s is coming to northwest Sioux Falls.

The restaurant will open a location near the Sanford Sports Complex at Benson Road and Northview Avenue.

The site is north across the street from Fleet Farm Gas Mart and is a partnership between Seth Skogen, who also owns the Culver’s locations in Brookings and Watertown, and Todd Versteeg, who will be owner-operator of this one.

“Even after almost 20 years, what drew me to Culver’s still does today. Culver’s is a top brand, has great products and has the best people,” Skogen said. “We really like the location we are going. The area is growing, and there is a large demand for food, especially a Culver’s.”

Steady growth in the northwest part of the city made the location attractive to Culver’s, according to Ryan Tysdal of Van Buskirk Cos., who represented Culver’s.

“Dale Jans and Mark Mickelson have done a tremendous job with their Jansmick Industrial Park, which has created a strong daytime population in the area,” Tysdal said. “Those employees need lunch options.”

In addition, the Sanford Sports Complex has more than 2.7 million annuals visits, he said.

“You have families at the sports complex – in some cases for several hours a day – with very limited nearby dining options,” Tysdal said.

Proximity to Interstate 29 was a big draw for Culver’s, with more than 60,000 vehicles per day.

“I feel that the I-29/I-90 corridor is an area that is very hungry for some restaurants and especially in the QSR industry,” Versteeg said. “Being near the sports complex is a win-win for everyone, and (we’re) looking forward to it.”

Interstate 29 is expected to carry almost 100,000 vehicles a day within 20 years, according to the South Dakota Department of Transportation’s website.

“This is an example of how Sioux Falls has evolved into a mature retail market,” Tysdal said. “Years ago, a restaurant or retail chain could cover Sioux Falls with one or two locations. Anymore, you need several locations to cover all the pockets throughout the city.”

Culver’s anticipates being open later this year.

“We have a growth plan (for future locations), but we need to see how the city and the surrounding communities progress,” Skogen said.
