Will it rain at this year’s Indianapolis 500? Early outlook suggests race day will be dry

INDIANAPOLIS — Early projections suggest the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 will be dry.

As of Monday, members of FOX59/CBS4’s Weather Authority team are not projecting rainfall on race day. High temperatures are currently expected to stretch into the low 70s on race day Sunday, and skies are forecasted to be partly cloudy.

In its history, the Indianapolis 500 has been postponed by rain at least five times — including last year. The race has been shortened by rain at least seven times.

The wettest race day on record came on May 30, 2004. On that date, more than 3.8 inches of rain fell in central Indiana.

Should high temperatures only hit 70 degrees on Sunday, this year’s Indianapolis 500 would be on the colder side. The average high temperature on Indianapolis 500 race day is 78 degrees.

The warmest Indianapolis 500 on record came in 1937, when high temperature reached 92 degrees. Conversely, the coldest Indianapolis 500 happened in 1992, when a high of 58 degrees was recorded.
