Strong to severe storms are likely on Tuesday in central Indiana
May has been a very active month for central Indiana weather-wise. Last week we had a seven-day streak of consecutive rainy days, pushing our monthly total to 2.66″, about half of what we receive during a normal month of May. We’ve had 7 days with winds gusts of 30 mph or more, including a 75 mph wind gust Friday evening. Also Friday evening, four tornadoes touch down in south-central Indiana, bringing our yearly total to 49 tornadoes. We typically see 22 tornadoes a year across the state.

After 3am Tuesday, a prominent round of rainfall will move into central Indiana. Heavy downpours and embedded thunderstorms are likely Tuesday morning as a warm front moves over the state. The southern half of the state is highlighted under a Slight Risk Zone (Level 2 of 5) for Tuesday afternoon and evening. A few strong to severe thunderstorms may develop and produce gusty winds. Large hail and a couple storms could rotate along the warm front. High temperatures will in the 60s and 1-2″ of rain is likely through Tuesday night.

This will be a cooler week with highs in the 60s and a few scattered showers linger through Wednesday and skies will clear Thursday. The best news of all is that we’re expecting sunny skies and warming trend through the weekend, with only a 20% chance for rain on race day.

May has been a wet, stormy month so far.
