Llovana Torres, 26, was charged with aggravated battery to a child after police responded at around 8 a.m. Saturday to her residence in the 1700 block of West Touhy.
Court documents state that Torres woke up to a mess around the house after cleaning the night before.
She then allegedly struck her 7-year-old son several times, according to documents. In order to avoid the beating, the boy reportedly crawled into a cabinet underneath the sink.
Torres tried to pull her son from under the sink and then grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him repeatedly, documents allege.
The grandmother of the boy forced her daughter to take the boy to a hospital in Evanston, according to court documents.
The boy was airlifted to Lurie Children’s Hospital to undergo an emergency surgery and remains hospitalized on a ventilator as of Monday.
After she was placed into custody, documents allege that Torres called her mother in an effort to try to get the grandmother to tell a different story.
Torres was ordered detained during a pre-trial hearing on Monday.
