Beloit woman among two students who died in ‘isolated incident’ at UW-Platteville

PLATVILLE, Wis. (WTVO) — A Beloit woman is among two students who died Monday in what University of Wisconsin-Platteville officials are calling an “isolated incident” inside a residence hall.

According to reports, 22-year-old Kelsie Martin, of Beloit, and 22-year old Baraboo native Hallie Helms died at around 4 p.m., inside a Wilgus Hall dorm room.

Although law enforcement has not released many details, one witness reported hearing arguing in the room at around 3:20 p.m., followed by a “loud bang” and what sounded like a heavy object hitting the floor. Other students reported hearing two gunshots.

Officials say there is no current threat to the public.

“This incident was a targeted and isolated event between the two individuals,” Chancellor Dr. Tammy Evetovich wrote in a statement. “Families of the students have been notified.”

Martin graduated Saturday with a degree in psychology. Helms earned a degree in elementary education.
