Woman dead, man critical in suspected murder-suicide attempt in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A woman is dead and a man is in critical condition following a shooting at an apartment complex in Baton Rouge early Monday morning.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO) responded to the Tanglewood Apartments at 9889 Hooper Road around 3:20 a.m. in connection with a murder and attempted suicide.

EBRSO said the victim, identified as Kayelyn Ford, 22, told deputies she believed her ex-boyfriend was using an old key to access her apartment.

A search of the residence did not uncover anyone, and Ford stated that she would go find somewhere else to stay with her friend.

According to law enforcement, after deputies left Ford’s apartment, the ex-boyfriend exited the wooded area and ambushed her while leaving the apartment.

Ford died at the scene.

The ex-boyfriend was identified as Brandon Bell, 24. The sheriff’s office said Bell reportedly shot and killed Ford, then shot himself. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and is not expected to survive his injuries, according to authorities.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office alerted EBRSO that Bell’s grandparents said he took their vehicle. They believe he used it to get to Baton Rouge.

The East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene.

The investigation into the deadly shooting is ongoing.
