Mick Abel — the Philadelphia Phillies’ 2020 first-round draft pick — pitched six scoreless innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates, with no walks and nine strikeouts, on the way to a 1-0 win.
His nine strikeouts tied the franchise’s record for a debut, which had been set back in 1947. In response, the Phillies broadcast team gave Abel’s dad, Neil, the official scorecard.
He also had a shout-out for his home in Oregon during a post-game interview.
“I appreciate every single person that’s supported me and, you know, been here with me whether it’s for one step or every step of the way,” Abel said. “It’s my home, and I feel kind of humbled being from there. A lot of pride coming from Oregon.”
