Baxter County not named in disaster declaration; options remain for assistance

Izard County qualifies for FEMA assistance following March strong storms

Residents in North Central Arkansas impacted by the March 14-15 storms and tornadoes can now apply for federal disaster assistance although some local counties where not included. The support follows President Donald Trump’s approval of a Major Disaster Declaration for Arkansas after a request from Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

The declaration covers nine counties, including Izard, Sharp, and Stone counties in North Central Arkansas. These areas saw significant damage from the early spring storms, which brought strong winds, hail, and tornadoes across the region.

Baxter County was not included in the declaration and OEM Director, David Stults says this was due to the low level of impact sustained in the county.

The OEM Director says residents in Baxter County still have options to receive assistance if they were affected by the March storms.

The recent declaration from the President does not apply to the widespread flooding North Central Arkansas experienced in April. Residents will need to wait for separate declarations for damage sustained from those events.

Federal assistance is intended to support recovery but cannot duplicate insurance benefits. Survivors with homeowner or renter insurance should file a claim with their provider first. If insurance does not cover all damages, residents may then be eligible for federal help.

To apply for FEMA disaster assistance under declaration number DR-4865-AR by visiting www.DisasterAssistance.gov, download the FEMA mobile app or call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Applicants should keep receipts for all cleanup and repair purchases, as FEMA may require documentation to verify expenses.
