Louisiana college students caught on video entering closed bar during scavenger hunt

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Surveillance video from Bruno’s Tavern on Maple Street shows several Tulane students on Monday, May 12, lurking outside.

They were taking part in a scavenger hunt that featured tasks such as “mooning president Fitz’s house” and “swimming in Audubon Pond.”

At Bruno’s, the task was to take a shot.

The bar was closed, but a cleaner momentarily propped the door open, not knowing the students were there. The video shows the crowd walking in and proceeding to pour shots for themselves.

The owner of Redd’s, another bar on the scavenger list, says this issue likely could have been prevented if the students just called Bruno’s ahead of time to let the staff know of their plans.

“For instance, there was a pub crawl Saturday that we found out about that we made sure we were staffed and ready to go, but if you’re going to do something at noon on a Monday, let the places know,” Redd’s Tavern owner Eric Orlando said.

Back at Bruno’s, the cleaner alerted the bar’s manager, who then called Tulane Police. The students stayed at the bar for about 45 minutes before they left.

Now, Tulane Dean of Students Erica Woodley told WGNO News in a statement:

“The behavior is completely unacceptable and counter to our core values and the standards to which we hold our community members.”

In an email to students, Woodley said that the University is considering whether or not the students will be permitted to participate in the upcoming commencement.

Bruno’s Tavern released a statement that said:

“While we are troubled by these events, we are encouraged by the individuals who have come forward to take responsibility for their actions.”
