Portion of Chicago salt dome roof ripped off in Thursday’s strong storms

CHICAGO (WGN) — Strong winds from Thursday evening’s storms packed a punch powerful enough to cause significant damage to one of the city’s salt domes.

A good portion of the dome at the Chicago Bureau of Sanitation location on the city’s far south side was blown off, with debris reportedly strewn up to 60 yards away.

“The winds were really intense. We got reports and verified that half of our dome on 101st and Stony was affected by the storm,” Department of Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Cole Stallard told WGN.

The salt dome at the chicago bureau of sanitation location at 10101 s stony island ave.

Stallard said it’s been an “all hands on deck and a full city approach” since early Friday morning when his office was alerted to the damage.

The commissioner said his department was working closely with the city’s Department of Fleet & Facility Management to get the dome fixed.

“We’re all on it, notifying the mayor’s office and keeping them abreast of the situation,” he said.
