BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — May 16, 2025 — A semi-truck loaded with 26,000 jars of peanut butter rolled into Hoosier Hills Food Bank Friday, thanks to a $28,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation aimed at fighting food insecurity in Southern Indiana.

The donation will provide peanut butter to the food bank’s 85 partner agencies across Brown, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Orange and Owen counties in the coming months.

“We’re really grateful to Duke Energy Foundation for making this purchase possible,” said Julio Alonso, executive director and CEO of Hoosier Hills Food Bank. “Peanut butter is a high-demand source of protein, great for kids’ programs and versatile since it is ready to eat. Food insecurity is at its highest levels in a decade and we’ve experienced cuts in government commodities, so the ability to purchase nutritious food is crucial right now.”

Duke Energy’s Government and Community Relations Manager Liz Irwin joined food bank staff as they unloaded 16 pallets of creamy peanut butter.

“The Duke Energy Foundation has been a long-time supporter of Hoosier Hills Food Bank and the important work they do,” said Irwin. “We appreciate the positive impact the organization has made to address food insecurity for the most vulnerable populations in our region and are glad we can help.”

Hoosier Hills Food Bank serves thousands of individuals and families across the region. The peanut butter donation comes at a critical time, as demand for food assistance rises and federal food support decreases.
