Apple products stolen out of moving truck during heist on Pennsylvania Turnpike

FULTON COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Apple products were stolen out of a trailer while they were being hauled on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Fulton County, and State Police say they identified two people allegedly involved.

Lorenzo Vaduva, 24, of Washington, and Gabriel Chisoiu, 38, of California, are accused of stealing Apple devices from the truck while it was in transit, State Police at McConnellsburg said in charging documents.

When Troopers were made aware of the theft, they went to the Sideling Hill Travel Plaza in Taylor Township, where they inspected the trailer, seeing multiple opened pallets that had been rummaged through.

The driver told Troopers he picked up the load in Carlisle and didn’t stop until getting to the plaza. Once the trailer was loaded, a GPS tracker and bolt seal were installed.

On his way to the Turnpike, the driver reported seeing multiple vehicles following him, and when he merged onto the Turnpike, he noticed no one was passing him. According to charging documents, the driver believed the suspects were keeping traffic behind the truck so they could get into the trailer without anyone realizing.

A box truck and sedan then went in front of the victim, causing them to brake hard and slow down. At some point, there was another sedan behind the victim that had its lights off, despite it being dark out at the time.

The driver then got to the rest area and when he checked the trailer, he saw the doors were closed, but the seal was broken and the GPS tracker was not secured properly.

State Police say they were also able to watch a video recording from a stationary marked patrol cruiser on I-76 that showed the victim’s truck drive by with the trailer doors open and debris falling on the road. A box truck with its lights off was close behind it, and a white van was right next to the victim. About 20 seconds later, a group of vehicles also drives by.

A total of $287,737 worth of Apple Watches and MacBooks were stolen, a list given to Troopers showed.

Troopers were able to identify the vehicles through the help of the PA Turnpike records and tracked down two of them to a Dollar General in Perry County after finding out they were abandoned by the store.

Through the store’s surveillance video, social media, and phone records, Vaduva was identified as a suspect, State Police say. Meanwhile, Troopers learned one of the vehicles involved was registered to Chisoiu, and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement gave Troopers a photo of him, which matched the person who was spotted at the Dollar General with Vaduva, charging documents show.

The duo faces felony charges of theft and conspiracy and a misdemeanor charge of recklessly endangering another person.

They are awaiting a preliminary hearing that has yet to be scheduled.
