‘System failure’ cause of nationwide outage that impacted DMVs on Wednesday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A “system failure” caused a nationwide outage on Wednesday that impacted U.S. passport verification, but has since been resolved.

Giannoulias posted a notice to “X” around 9:30 a.m., saying, “Due to a nationwide outage, U.S. passport verification is currently unavailable. We are actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as they become available.”

The secretary of state’s office reassured that a process was put in place and DMVs were not experiencing any delays as a result of the outage.

The office released the following statement:

We activated a process that we put in place to enable us to process U.S. passports and immigration documents from other countries at our DMV facilities. We are not experiencing any delays at our DMVs as a result.

In an update Wednesday evening, the Secretary of State’s Office released the following statement:

The system failure experienced by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), which impacted DMVs across the nation earlier today, has been restored. The outage impacted the processing of passports and immigration documents. In Illinois, the Secretary of State’s office activated a new system it had implemented earlier this year, enabling a workaround and allowing DMVs statewide to process the documents without disruption or delays.
