This comes after DRMS announced that it would have to stop taking new cases at the beginning of May due to federal funding not being delivered.
DRMS is the federally mandated protection and advocacy agency for people with disabilities in the state of Mississippi. The agency, which is a private, nonprofit corporation, provides free legal and advocacy services to individuals with disabilities whose rights have been violated and investigates instances of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation.
The protection and advocacy system was founded because the public demanded accountability for institutions and advocacy to protect people with disabilities, and we believe the public voice is as important today as ever.
This morning, we received the remainder of our 2025 funding—no doubt this is thanks to all of you who reached out to your representatives to champion our agency’s work. We will resume taking new cases as of today.
Our focus now will shift toward protecting our funding for 2026. Thank you for your support during this time; we’re so grateful for our community.
