Pennsylvania bill would require high school coaches to receive mental health training

(WHTM) — For some student-athletes, coaches are often the person they feel most comfortable talking to regarding mental health struggles, but coaches aren’t typically trained to handle these situations. A House bill aims to change that.

The bill, proposed by State Rep. Mary Jo Daley (D-Montgomery) would require coaches to receive mental health awareness training. It would also ensure students, parents, coaches, and extracurricular advisors are aware of mental health services available in school and in the community.

“If you’re within the sound of my voice and you’re wearing a pin and you’re claiming that you can’t support the legislation because it puts a burden on somebody else, then shame on you,” said Kevin Lawrence, Red Lion baseball’s head coach.

Officials say a recent study surveying more than 10,000 coaches found that 67% of coaches want more training and information on mental health.
