Ozark Mountain School District millage proposal defeated Tuesday

The millage proposal by the Ozark Mountain School District was defeated by voters during the school election Tuesday. The district includes schools with campuses at Bruno-Pyatt in Marion County, St. Joe in Searcy County and Western Grove in Newton County. The measure was defeated with 364 votes against and 236 votes in favor.

The proposal would have extended the 11.5 mills for debt service for an additional 30 years. Now, it will expire after the 2027-28 school year and the district will have the minimum 25 maintenance and operations mills as required by the state.

The district was asking for the millage for general maintenance of existing buildings to do things such as replace roofs, renovating office space, make the schools more secure and other school purposes.

In Marion County, the vote was overwhelmingly against the measure. Only 13 people voted in favor with 194 voting against. In Searcy County, the vote was 40 in favor and 141 against. In Newton County, there were 183 for the proposal and 27 against.
