NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department has released video of a May incident that left a man dead, and an officer hospitalized.
The incident happened on May 2 at 10:35 a.m. in the parking lot of the Walmart on Tchoupitoulas Street.
An officer patrolling the area was alerted to an unconscious person in a nearby vehicle, possibly suffering an overdose. The officer responded and administered two doses of Narcan.
That’s when the man reportedly woke up and started to act erratically, fleeing the scene with the officer partially inside the vehicle. Kirkpatrick says that while being dragged down the street, the officer shot the suspect at least once before falling from the vehicle.
“He has her on the hood of the car. He either sideswipes or in some manner hits that truck which is parked on the side of the street. Our officer is found underneath the front of that truck,” said Kirkpatrick.
The subject was given aid on the scene before being taken to a hospital, where he later died. An update on the officer’s condition was not released.
