3 Bay Area spots added to Michelin California Guide

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Three Bay Area restaurants have been added to Michelin’s California Guide. The prestigious restaurant guide publisher added a total of 13 new restaurants from across the state to its 2025 Michelin Guide California.

San Francisco: Sungho

Topping the list locally is Sungho, a Korean restaurant in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Sungho’s chef, according to Michelin, drew inspiration from the memory of his grandmother’s kitchen “for a collection of hearty slow-simmered meat stews, including a gukbap that boasts fall-off-the-bone pork and tender rice.

The restaurant, which Michelin said highlights dishes seldom found in the Bay Area, offers generous portions meant for sharing and features a “lively” K-pop playlist.

Palo Alto: Ethel’s Fancy

Also making the updated list was Ethel’s Fancy, a California cuisine spot in Palo Alto launched by chef/owner Scott Nishiyama and named after his mother and grandmother. The space, according to Michelin, has a “rustic-meets-elegant vibe” that’s mirrored in “down-to-earth California cuisine” showcasing peak-season ingredients.

The menu at Ethel’s Fancy is small, and like Sungho, geared towards sharing. Michelin singled out the “katsu-style” swordfish cutlet and hojicha tapioca pudding for particular praise.

Menlo Park: Eylan

Rounding out the Bay Area trio is Eylan, a Menlo Park Indian spot launched by Chef Srijith Gopinathan. A “swanky Menlo Park sensation,” Eylan draws crowds with an inventive blend of regional Indian cuisine with a fresh California twist.

Michelin highlights menu items like a flaky, paratha-type bread filled with Dungeness crab, lemon-grass scented gulf shrimp, and pineapple kebabs. Eylan’s “carefully chosen wines and clever cocktails” add to the restaurant’s appeal, according to Michelin.
