From June 3 – June 15, the legendary Broadway show, The Wiz, is coming to the Academy of Musix as part of Ensemble Arts’ 2024-2025 Broadway season.
“This groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz changed the face of Broadway, from its iconic
score packed with soul, gospel, rock, and 70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy’s journey to find
her place in a contemporary world,” said a description by Ensemble Arts Philly.
The musical is based on L. Frank Baum’s children’s book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and transforms it into “an all-Black musical extravaganza for the ages.”
The Wiz first premiered on Broadway in 1975, becoming an “instant sensation” and winning seven Tony® Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actor in a
Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Choreography, and a Broadway first, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Costume Design.
“The Wiz is part of Philadelphia’s long and rich theater history, with show tryouts occurring at
The Forrest Theatre, ahead of its Broadway debut in the mid-1970s,” said Frances Egler, Vice President of Theatrical Programming and Presentations at Ensemble Arts Philly.
“With this much-anticipated revival, The Wiz’s creative team has blended spectacular performances with groundbreaking visual design to breathe new life into a treasured Broadway masterpiece and share a vibrant celebration of culture and inclusion with an entirely new generation.”
