WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Ind. (May 13, 2025) – The Monroe Fire Protection District has opened a new fire station at 478 E. Chambers Pike, to enhance public safety for residents in northern Monroe County.

The facility, designated Station 26, aims to reduce emergency response times previously hampered by longer distances from the nearest existing station on North Old State Road 37. Staffed around the clock by two firefighter/EMTs, the new station will provide immediate and effective emergency services, especially critical in rural areas.

“This new station will allow us to provide faster and more effective emergency services to Washington Township and surrounding areas,” said Jeffrey Combs, Assistant Chief of the Monroe Fire Protection District. “With shorter response times and increased resources, we can better protect lives and property while strengthening our ability to serve the residents of Monroe County.”

Station 26 will operate several key firefighting and rescue vehicles:

A rescue engine for fires, alarms, and motor vehicle incidents.

A Brush/Medical Squad vehicle for wildland fires and EMS calls.

A water tender to supply water for firefighting in locations lacking hydrants.

While most local incidents are medical emergencies, larger incidents such as structure fires will see collaboration from firefighters and equipment from all seven existing Monroe Fire Protection District stations, plus mutual aid partners. MFD policy calls for a minimum response of sixteen firefighters and four fire trucks to structure fires, a standard that will be more readily achievable with the addition of Station 26.

Local township boards, the Monroe Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, and area officials were instrumental in the establishment of the new station.

The public is invited to celebrate the station’s opening during an open house scheduled for Saturday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees can tour the facility, meet the firefighters, enjoy grilled burgers and hotdogs, and learn valuable fire safety information.
