CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) – Canton leaders are working to tackle a recent wave of violence across the city, but not all residents are on board with the plan.

In an effort to combat the violence, Canton Mayor William Truly asked the city for a $1 million budget to invest in safety and security. Citizens agree that there is a crime issue, but there were mixed feelings about the seven-figure request.

“What’s wrong with what they got already? Sounds like overkill to me. No programs, no solution,” said one resident.

“We do need extra security, and I think that’s a wise thing to ask for those resources to be able to help the city be the best that it can be. And with those resources, it will be able to invest in the community, to give the community that extra security that they feel like they need,” said another resident.

Some citizens have questioned why the mayor waited so long to present a plan. Truly’s term will be up soon, and the next mayor will take over. Citizens are ready to see a change, but some believe it’s best to wait until the next administration.
