It began as an idea to help her sister, who was recovering from a C-section. Using her background in fashion design, Helya Mohammadian built her first prototype.
“I really struggled in the beginning in trying to get this business going. Really getting people to understand the need for this product,” Mohammadian said.
Mohammadian created the clothing brand Slick Chicks to fill a void in the retail
“There were pre-orders for people that were wheelchair users, women with chronic illnesses, women in the military. I realized women from all walks of life are wanting accessibility. Especially people with disabilities. I had no idea there was huge gap in the market. There was no adaptive clothing that existed. So that is where that passion came from. The mission to make products that make people feel good and empowered,” Mohammadian said.
Her forward-thinking knowledge of fashion led to the development of Slick Chicks, which she describes as a solution-based, ease-of-use product geared toward women post-pregnancy and surgery, those with permanent or temporary disabilities, and seniors with limited mobility.
“Everyone wants to feel good in their clothing. Regardless of your age or ability,” Mohammadian said.
“So it’s really for anyone who wants easy-of-access and ease-of-use. Who just wants to feel good in their clothing and not compromise on fashion because the product is also adaptive and functional. As we are aging, we are living longer and we still want to look good in our clothing. We all deserve to look and feel good. My mom who is in her 70s’ loves the bras. She loves the convenience of them,” Mohammadian said.
Mohammadian grew up in Ruston, Louisiana after her family immigrated from Iran when she was three-years-old. She now lives in New York City where she is growing Slick Chicks and expanding its options.
“We are bringing that gap between fashion. So we make bras, underwear, lounge wear, athletic wear, leisure wear and everything is made to meet people where they are in their life,” she said.
After putting in the hard, technical work and launching Slick Chicks nearly ten years ago, she said the response has been so fulfilling. She wants her customers to feel comfortable, beautiful, and feminine. No matter their body types, age or abilities.
“Having that independence is so huge for someone’s confidence. Putting your clothes on is the first thing we do in the morning. It sets the tone for the day. So I think it’s so important for someone’s self confidence and for someone to feel empowered. They are able to dress themselves or with help from a care giver or care taker. Everyone deserves that dignity,” Mohammadian said.
Slick Chicks recently opened in Louisiana CVS stores. Customers can also visit their website to browse the options and order a set for themselves or someone they know.
