JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Offshore powerboat racing is speeding into Lake Pontchartrain this summer.

The race will be the first of its kind in the New Orleans area in almost 20 years.

Powerboat P1 announced the inaugural offshore race at the Bonnabel Boat Launch during a Monday news conference.

According to organizers, the event is set to include a boat poker run, kilo speed trials, a parade of boats and a party with food and entertainment.

Organizers said the location is great for racers and spectators alike.

“This lake is amazing for it. It’s not only amazing for it, but it’s a lake where spectators can just be lined up watching. There will be so much room for boats to safely drop anchor and stay away and stay safe. You just don’t get that other places,” said Harvey Gulf International Marine CEO Shane Guidry on Monday.

The event will take place from June 27 through June 29 at the Bonnabel Boat Launch.
