Guns, drugs seized following investigation into repeat violent offender on Indy’s northwest side

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man is in jail facing drugs and weapons charges after police say he was busted following a lengthy investigation on the city’s northwest side.

The bust illustrates IMPD’s focus on getting illegally possessed guns and drugs out of the hands of repeat violent offenders.

Over the course of several weeks, IMPD took several surveillance pictures of a man they suspected was dealing drugs out of his home on Indy’s northwest side, near 86th and Lafayette Road.

That undercover work led to the arrest of 31-year-old Isaiah Rivera on drugs and weapons charges.

During a search of the suspect’s home, IMPD seized four guns, once of which was reportedly equipped with a machine gun conversion device.

Police claim a search of the suspect’s home revealed the following:

  • Glock handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device
  • 7.62 Mini Draco firearm
  • Shotgun
  • AR-15 rifle
  • Around 122 grams of suspected fentanyl
  • Around 235 grams of marijuana

IMPD believes busts like the one at the home on Walden Trace Court can reduce to potential for violence.

“When we see repeat offenders, our goal is to get the firearms out of their hands because when you have firearms and narcotics, you often see violent activity and our communities deserve better,” said IMPD officer Tommy Thompson.

Court records show Rivera has been a convicted serious violent felon since 2014, making his possession of the firearms illegal.

“An individual who should not have guns had guns and that’s why we do what we do, to make our community safer. We’re going to keep doing that,” said Thompson.

Because of the suspect’s criminal history, the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force investigated this case.

Police encourage everyone to speak up if they suspect illegal activity involving drugs and guns is taking place on their street.

“We want to ensure we give our communities the best life possible. We can’t do that unless you tell us this is going on in your neighborhoods,” said Thompson.

The suspect is due in court for an initial hearing later this week. His bond was set at $200,000 surety pending trial.
